Professionalism Expectations

2014-2015

Knowledge and ability of how to officiate a volleyball match is just one facet of being a good referee. Being “professional” before, during and after the match is just as important.

Webster’s Dictionary defines a professional this way: “of, engaged in, or worthy of the high standards of a profession”. Note the emphasis on “high standards”.

USA Volleyball states the recipe for Professionalism as:

One part Golden Rule

  • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

One part Common Sense

  • Use knowledge and experience to make an equitable decision

Therefore, the North Texas Region expects the following from a true professional referee:

  • Keep your ZebraWeb availability up-to-date and accept assignments promptly
  • Communicate immediately with NTR Staff when your plans change
  • Arrive to your assignment in appropriate attire. Have the proper uniform and make sure it is clean, pressed and neat
  • Practice good hygiene
  • Be punctual and detail-oriented
  • Use the correct language, speak in proper tone
  • Refrain from using profanity
  • You are responsible for your actions
  • Avoid religious, racial or personal comments
  • Carry the proper referee equipment with you at all times
  • Do what is asked of you, whether it comes from the NTR Officials Coordinator, the NTR Staff or your Head Referee
  • Avoid addressing spectators/parents directly. Notify your Head Referee
  • Never leave the playing facility without permission from your Head Referee
  • No matter what level of play you are calling, work just as hard on that match. Everyone deserves your best effort
  • Communicate any areas of concern with your Head Referee or the NTR Officials Coordinator.
  • Never publicly criticize another official, coach, parent or player
  • Keep your knowledge of the USAV Rules and Mechanics up-to-date
  • Avoid conflicts of interest whenever possible
  • Adhere to the USAV Participant Code of Conduct which may be viewed Code of Conduct (member copy)
