Head / Lead Referee Intern Program

Head/Lead Referee’s must have attained Junior National, National or International ratings to be considered.

Recognizing that there is potential in many referees who have attained a Regional rating, an intern program has been developed to give the Regional referees (who will most likely be attaining a Junior National rating in the very near future) an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to be a Head/Lead Referee.

Expectations to be a Head / Lead Ref Intern:

1. They must be in good-standing and have cleared a current background screen with USAV and be Safe Sport certified.
2. They must send an email stating their desire to participate in the intern program to the Official’s Coordinator; an email will be sent to the prospective intern stating they will be accepted into the program;
3. They must have attended Head/Lead Referee Training provided by the Official’s Coordinator or VP of Education in that USAV season;
4. They will work alongside another Head/Lead Ref for at least one day of a two day tournament to assist in the duties of that Head/Lead Ref, to learn and watch and get a sense of the communication, leadership and evaluation skills needed to be a Head/Lead Ref. This will not be a “paid” position. It will be on a volunteer basis.
5. It is expected that they do this at least twice, possibly three times, in their intern year. After each tournament in their internship, the Head/Lead Ref shall submit an evaluation to the Official’s Coordinator that will be based on a “Pass/Fail” basis. If the intern passes all their assignments, once they have attained the rating of Junior National, they can apply to be a Head/Lead Ref in that following season.

If a current JN or National ref who has not been a Head/Lead Ref in the past wishes to be a Head Ref, they must meet the same expectations as the Regional Ref with the exception of number 5 above.
